When should you use a random team generator?

  • Splitting a PE class or training session. Get even sides in one spin, without the line-up that leaves the same child standing there last every single week.

How the split is made

The generator shuffles your full list using a fresh pseudorandom draw, then deals people out across the number of teams you asked for. Dealing rather than chunking is what keeps the sizes even — with eleven people across three teams you get four, four, three rather than five, five, one.

It is random, not balanced by skill. If you need even ability rather than even numbers, split your roster into tiers first and run the generator once per tier, then combine — that gives you fairness on both axes.

How to use the random team generator

  1. Add all names. Paste every participant into the wheel.
  2. Spin to assign. Spin repeatedly to draw members, assigning each to the next team in turn.
  3. Build your teams. Remove each drawn name so the next spin picks someone new until everyone is assigned.

Not automatically — the split is genuinely random. If you need to control a pairing, assign those people by hand first and run the generator on everyone else.

Can I re-run it if a split looks lopsided?

Yes, and there is no harm in it. Bear in mind that re-rolling until you like the result is you choosing the teams, which is fine as long as everyone knows that is what happened.

Can I share a wheel with someone else?
